Sara Hemingway, executive director
of the Green River Community Foundation, spoke at
the GRADD Board of Directors meeting on December 9,
discussing how her agency coordinates over $18 million
in local charitable giving.

Conference on November 20, Mr.
Kenny Williams of Cornerstone
Counseling discussed mental health disorders in
children, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder.

Czech "Velvet Revolution"
GRADD Board member Judge
Reid Haire (left) and
Mayor Ron Payne of Owensboro
joined a local delegation to the Czech Republic in mid
November. The group traveled to GRADD's Sister
Region--the Olomouc Kraj--to participate in ceremonies
marking the 20th anniversary of the "Velvet
Revolution," in which the Czechs peacefully overthrew
communist rule, in favor of democratic government.

Martin, new Regional Response Manager for
the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management's Region
2, was the guest speaker at the November 16 GRADD
Board of Directors meeting. She discussed the ways
her agency helps area officials and citizens prepare and
recover from disasters such as last winter's historic
ice storm.

GRADD partnered with three
local public libraries this fall to host "Senior
Day at the Library" events. In Hartford
(September 8), Henderson (November 3), and Owensboro
(November 12), seniors discovered the numerous
invaluable resources available in their community
facility.

U.S. Congressmen Brett
Guthrie (top) and Ed Whitfield
(bottom) visited the GRADD region on November 12,
to deliver nearly $2 million in U.S. Economic
Development Administration funding to Owensboro and
Henderson officials. Guthrie announced $986,000 for
Owensboro's Centre for Business and Research, while
Whitfield announced $921,000 for Henderson's flood-prone
Canoe Creek district.

The Green River Mental
Health & Aging Coalition presented the
2009 River Mental Health / Elder Abuse
Conference on October 29, at Bellevue
Baptist Church in Owensboro. Guest speakers
included Dr. Stephen Cox, Angela Woosley, RN, and
Kentucky State Ombudsman Kim Baker.

The
Significance of Spirituality
On October 20, GRADD's Area
Agency on Aging sponsored the Faith &
Aging Conference at Walnut Memorial Baptist
Church in Owensboro. Speakers discussed important topics
for seniors such as budgeting, managing stress and
worry, disaster preparedness, and the role of faith at
the end of life. Attendees included church ministers,
senior adult leaders, caregivers, and community
professionals.

Search 101
GRADD's Workforce Development
department sponsored the "How to Get a
Job" seminar, workshop, and job fair at OCTC on
October 13. Participants heard motivational
speakers, met potential employers, and
even received insider advice from area HR
managers.
