"Reflections on Aging" |
The following poem was
written by Daviess County senior citizen and GRADD
Social Services client Ms. Mary
Blackford:
When one's hair is turning gray,
There are many things that people say
Which lets you know that they're aware
Of the bit of gray that's in your hair.
Instead of telling you you're old,
"You've silver threads among the gold."
Or "The salt and pepper that I see
Just adds a bit of dignity."
Or "On the pumpkin there is frost,"
And ignore the hair that you have lost.
"There's snow upon the mountain
top"
Means white's the color of your mop.
But none have ever been so bold
As to say to me, "You're getting old."
If hoary heads are crowned with wisdom
After all is done and said,
I fear others are the mountains
And I'm the pumpkin
head. | |
