Finding Those in Need
GRADD Awarded Major Benefits Outreach & Enrollment Grant

At a March 11 press conference, GRADD announced receipt of a $100,000 National Council on Aging grant to find and enroll senior citizens and disabled individuals with limited incomes into public benefits programs.  GRADD is one of only 10 organizations nationwide -- and the only in Kentucky -- to be awarded this NCOA grant.  Partnering with nine other state and local social service agencies, GRADD will seek to enroll 3,000 western Kentucky residents in programs such as Medicare D, Food Stamps, and Prescription Assistance within the next 12 months.
*To learn more about this program, please contact Jeanette Woodward.

Heart of the Matter
Health Council Sponsors Women's Heart Health Lunch & Learn Events

In late February and early March, the Green River Regional Health Council hosted four lunchtime events -- in Ohio, Hancock, Webster, and Union counties -- to educate area women about heart disease.  Representatives from the Green River District Health Department, local physicians, and heart attack survivors shared valuable insights, and attendees received free blood pressure screenings.
*To find out how to get involved with your county health council, please contact Stephanie Lamar.

Capitol Conversation
Area Legislators Participate in Annual GRADD Legislative Breakfast

More than 100 citizens from across the region turned out for GRADD's annual legislative forum on Saturday, February 28.  Senator Dorsey Ridley (center) and Representatives Jim Glenn, Jim Gooch (right), Tommy Thompson, and David Watkins (left) recapped the 2009 General Assembly and took questions and comments from constituents.
*Watch for the upcoming edition of the GRADD Dialogue newsletter for a breakdown of new laws passed in this session.

Mapping McLean County
GRADD GIS/GPS Team Undertakes Comprehensive Structure Collection Project

GRADD is partnering with the McLean County Fiscal Court to collect GPS data on all homes, businesses, and other buildings in the county this spring.  The project, funded through a Delta Regional Authority (DRA) grant, will provide invaluable data to local emergency management officials to use during natural disasters and will help to improve response times for first responders.
*For more details about this innovative project, please contact Bill Smith or Lance Talmadge.

Energizing Discussion
GRADD Hosts Southern Growth Policies Board Forum on the Future of Energy in Our Region

Former Owensboro Municipal Utilities general manager Bob Carper moderated a community forum on energy at GRADD on February 19.  Individuals from diverse backgrounds -- government, non-profit, education, and business -- discussed building a green economy, encouraging local energy savings, and capitalizing on existing energy businesses in our region.  Feedback from the forum will be incorporated into the 2009 Report on the Future of the South, a high profile policy report shared with southern governors and other regional leaders.
*To learn more about the Southern Growth Policies Board, please visit www.southern.org.

Talking Taxes
GRADD Hosts Employment Tax Training for Local Finance Officials

State Social Security Program Manager James Driver visited the GRADD office on February 17 to lead a discussion of new Internal Revenue Service audit standards for cities and counties.  Nearly a dozen local clerks, treasurers, and finance officers attended to learn more about taxable fringe benefits, 1099 reporting, independent contractors, and the latest IRS updates.
