OCTOBER 2009

2009 GRADD Annual Awards Unveiled
Over 400 people attended this year's GRADD Annual Dinner at the Hines Center in Philpot on September 14. A highlight of the evening's festivities was the presentation of the 2009 GRADD Annual Awards. Three area individuals were honored with GRADD Regional Excellence Awards, and one local city was named the 2nd Annual "GRADD Community of the Year."
37th Annual GRADD Arts & Crafts Festival
More than 6,000 visitors from across the Tri-State and beyond descended upon Henderson's Audubon State Park the weekend of October 3-4 to experience an autumn tradition. The 37th Annual GRADD Arts & Crafts Festival drew over 80 artisan and craftsman booths, artist demonstrators, and musicians.
Senior Day Out
GRADD teamed up with the Kentucky State Police, the Green River TRIAD, and the Regional Citizen Corps Council to present the 2009 Senior Day Out at Towne Square Mall on September 24. Over 1,200 seniors learned about disaster preparedness, consumer fraud, and elder abuse, while enjoying a day of fun, fellowship, and live entertainment.
Senior Day at the Gardens
Another popular early fall event -- Senior Day at the Gardens -- was held on September 22 at Western Kentucky Botanical Gardens in Owensboro.  Area seniors toured the WKBG grounds and were given tips on gardening, bird watching, exercise, and even enjoyed poetry.
GRADD Helps Fund New Utica Fire Station
Last month GRADD awarded a $160,000 Infrastructure Revolving Loan Fund (IRLF) program low-interest loan to Daviess County's Utica Volunteer Fire Department.  The department will utilize the funds to help pay for construction of their new fire station off US Highway 431.

GRADD Receives Homelessness Grant
In September, GRADD was awarded a $139,352 federal stimulus grant to combat homelessness in the region. The Housing & Emergency Assistance Reaching the Homeless (HEARTH) program funds will assist individuals at Daviess County's Boulware Center Mission and Henderson County's Matthew 25.
Senior Day at the Ohio County Library
On September 8, GRADD partnered with the Ohio County Public Library in Hartford to sponsor the first annual Ohio County Senior Day at the Library event, where seniors enjoyed fun and fellowship while learning about the many resources available at their local library.

Kentucky 2nd District Congressman Brett Guthrie was the guest speaker at the August 12 GRADD Board of Directors meeting. Rep. Guthrie updated local officials about pending legislative action on Capitol Hill dealing with the economy, the environment, health care reform, and other vital issues.
Senior Celebration
Senior Celebration 2009 was held at Owensboro Christian Church on August 11. More than 300 area senior citizens enjoyed a fun-filled day learning about health and exercise, watching magic tricks, and listening to the humor, motivation, and music of Mr. Bob Park of Henderson.
I-69 Moves Step Closer to Reality
In early August, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels came together for a historic ceremony at Henderson's Audubon State Park. The two governors signed legislation helping to fund major bi-state transportation projects, like the proposed Interstate 69 bridge over the Ohio River at Henderson.
A Conversation on Southern Energy
The Southern Growth Policies Board recently released its 2009 Report on the Future of Energy in the South. GRADD hosted a forum of government, non-profit, education, and business leaders in February to solicit regional input, and this data was incorporated into SGPB's final report.
